How to edit your templates in Canva
Last updated: September 17, 2026Most Koi designs include a Canva link so you can personalize them with names, colors or photos. A free account is enough. Follow this order and your file will be ready to print with the original measurements intact.
Open the template and make your copy
When you open the link, Canva offers to use the template. Accepting creates a copy in your account while the original file stays untouched, so you can start over whenever you want.
Rename the design with your client or event name so you can find it later.
Change text and fonts
Double click any text to edit it. If you change the font, check that the text stays inside the design area and does not run over the cut lines.
Avoid growing text beyond its box: anything past the edge is lost when the piece is trimmed.
Change colors, photos and details
Select a shape and pick a new color from the palette. To use your own photos, upload them in the uploads tab and drag them onto the image you want to replace.
If an element will not move, it is locked on purpose: it holds the structure of the piece.
What you should not move
These elements are calculated so the piece assembles correctly. Changing them is the most common reason pieces stop fitting.
- The document size
- Cut lines and trim marks
- The safety margins
- The assembly tabs on boxes and bags
Download the file for printing
Go to Share, then Download, and choose PDF print. Leave crop marks and bleed off unless your print shop asks for them.
Download the full file once and review it on your computer before sending it to the printer.
Keep your versions
Duplicate the page before making a big variation. That way the original stays safe while you try colors or names.
Canva saves on its own. If you delete something by accident, restore it from version history in the file menu.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Canva Pro?
No. The templates work with a free account. Pro only adds premium assets that are not needed to build the piece.
Can I edit on my phone?
Yes, with the Canva app. Downloading the final PDF is easier on a computer.
Can I change the design size?
We do not recommend it. The size is calculated so the piece assembles well; changing it throws off tabs and folds.
